Mumbai is the capital of the Indian state of Maharashtra. It is the most populous city in India, and the fifth most populous city in the world, with a population of approximately 12.5 million. Mumbai lies on the west coast of India and has a deep natural harbour. Mumbai was named an Alpha world city in 2009. Mumbai is the richest city in India and has the highest GDP of any city in South, West or Central Asia. Berlin, London, Yokohama, St. Petersburg and Los-Angeles are Mumbai’s sister cities.


Mumbai, being the commercial and entertainment capital of India, generates 5% of India's GDP and accounts for 25% of industrial output, 70% of maritime trade in India and 70% of capital transactions to India's economy. Mumbai's business opportunities, as well as its potential to offer a higher standard of living, attract migrants from all over India making Mumbai a potpourri of many communities and cultures. Mumbai is home to all important financial institutions of India and houses some of India's premier scientific and nuclear institutes. The city also houses India's Hindi (Bollywood) and Marathi film and television industry.


Mumbai is well connected to all major international airports throughout the world and is one of the busiest airports in Asia. The average annual temperature in Mumbai is 27.2 °C (81 °F), and the average annual precipitation is 2,167 mm. Mumbai’s climate is pleasant during November, December, January and February. It receives heavy rainfall during August and September.
