Kolkata is the capital of the Indian state of West Bengal and a Gamma World City. Located on the east bank of the Hooghly River, Kolkata is the commercial capital of East India. The city of Kolkata has over 6 million residents, and the metropolitan area, including suburbs, has a population approximately 18 million, making it the third most populous metropolitan area in India and the 13th most populous urban area in the world. After a brief period of economic stagnation in later half of 20th century since the year 2000, an economic rejuvenation has led to acceleration in the city's growth.


Kolkata is the main business, commercial and financial hub of East India and the northeastern states. It is home to the Calcutta Stock Exchange. Until recently, flexible production had always been the norm in Kolkata, and the informal sector has comprised more than 40% of the labour force. For example, roadside hawkers generated business worth 2 billion U.S. dollars in 2005. As in many other Indian cities, information technology became a major growing sector in Kolkata since late 1990s, with the IT sector growing at 70% yearly — twice that of the national average. Long Beach, Macau, Naples, Guangzhou and Dhaka are Kolkata’s sister cities.


Kolkata is the only Indian city to be connected with a network of trams. It has good coverage of private bus service providers providing affordable means of transport. Kolkata international airport is connected to all major cities of the world. Kolkata has a tropical wet-and-dry climate. The annual mean temperature is 26.8 °C. Summers are hot and humid with temperatures in the low 30's and winter tends to last for only about three months, with seasonal lows dipping to 9 °C between December and January.
